You Are Here – May 17 thru June 21

Through this five-part series we are going to lay the groundwork on some goals and expectations for anyone involved with NBSM – students and leaders – as we go through quite a few transitions. We’ll look at the expectations of the students when it comes to their actions, responsibilities, and learning as well as the expectations for the leaders in their examples, honesty, and Biblical focus. We are also going to set the stage for our vision within NBSM – 1 Timothy 4:12 – and how everything that we will do will be filtered through FILLING UP or LIVING OUT a Godly example in Speech, Life, Love, Faith, and Purity.

Speech - 5/17/17

Main Points
 – What we choose to SAY – our words – should point others to Jesus.
– Jesus said that whatever is in our hearts will be what comes out of our mouths, so we have to make sure that we are filling up our hearts and minds with things that glorify God.
– The Bible says that our words should be HELPFUL, ENCOURAGING, THANKFUL, KIND, and JOYFUL all while pointing to Jesus.
– We need to set an example in how we talk to each other, our friends, our parents, other people, and how we talk to God.

Scripture
 – 1 Timothy 4:12-13
– Matthew 12:33-34, 36-37
– Ephesians 4:29
– Ephesians 5:4
– Proverbs 16:24
– Colossians 3:17

Life - 5/24/17

Main Points
 – What we DO – our life or actions – should point others to Jesus
– It is not just enough to talk the talk or believe what God has said, we have to do something about it and make sure that we are “producing good deeds.”
– Just like with our speech, changing our actions starts on the inside – within our hearts.
– Doing what God asks us to do is not always going to be easy or popular, but it IS what we should do if we truly believe in and love Him like we should as Christians.

Love - 6/7/17

Main Points
– Our speech and actions should point others to Jesus through reflecting His LOVE
– When we focus on speaking and acting in love, we move from a vertical perspective – focused on our individual relationship with God – to a horizontal perspective – focused on our relationships with those around us and putting them first
– God is for all people because we ALL have been or are rebellious, unGodly, and sinful
– We don’t get to choose who we love or who we don’t – Jesus died for all of us and all of our sins – and the people living in sin might need us to love them to show the Jesus so that they can change their ways

Scripture
– 1 Timothy 4:12
– John 3:16
– 1 John 3:16
– 1 Timothy 1:8-11
– John 8:1-11
– 1 Timothy 2:1-6

Faith - 6/14/17

Main Points
– Faith is not just something that we have – it is an active choice that we make each and every day
– True faith is being sure that all that God says or promises will actually happen – even if we don’t get to see it
– Our faith grows when our speech, actions, and love line up with what God says is best – even if we don’t understand it completely at the time
– Faith is not passive, like insurance, it is fully convinced that all that God says He will do in us or through us will actually happen

Scripture
– 1 Timothy 4:12
– Hebrews 11
– Genesis 12-25 (Abraham’s story)
– Romans 4:18 & 20-22
– Galatians 5:16
– Galatians 5:22-23

Message Notes

Purity - 6/21/17

Main Points
– Growing in Christ is both an inward and outward process where these should happen in harmony with one another
– The five areas that we are challenged to be examples of in 1 Timothy 4:12 build on one another and continue in a never-ending cycle
– Our speech, actions, love, and faith become more Godly as we train ourselves to keep our minds and hearts PURE
– We have to CAPTURE our thoughts and hold them prisoner to filter them through what the Bible says
– We need to CONFESS our thoughts to one another so that we can help each other
– We should REFINE our thoughts to remove the impurities through reading Scripture, changing what we let into our hearts or minds, putting something else (Godly) on our minds, or just by DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT
– Even after doing all of that, we still have to GUARD our thoughts by daily seeking God’s word, obeying what we learn through reading and studying, and by letting God’s word be the first place that we turn to get help

Scripture
– 1 Timothy 4:12
– Philippians 4:8-9
– 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
– 1 John 1:9
– James 5:16
– Malachi 3:2-4
– Psalm 119:9-16
– 1 Timothy 4:7-13
